Abstract

High molecular glycols are produced by treating persulphates with saturated fatty acids containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule suspended in sulphuric acid or oleum, if desired in the presence of boric acid. In an example, stearic acid is treated with potassium persulphate in the presence of monohydrate, boric acid and silver sulphate, and the resulting wax saponified. Heptadecene glycol is thus obtained, the saponifiable portion of the wax comprising oxidized acids and unchanged stearin acids. Natural mixtures of fatty acids, e.g. coconut, palmkernal and hardened vegetable and animal oils fatty acids may be employed as well as the pure acids. Caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, pentadecylic, palmitic, arachic, behenic, cerotic and melissic acids are mentioned.
