Abstract

Halogenated hydroquinones are made by treating a hydroquinone with nascent halogen. The hydroquinone is dispersed in a bath of the halogen acid and there is subsequently added thereto a substance capable of oxidising the halogen acid to liberate halogen and the halogenated hydroquinone so formed is separated from the mixture. Examples are given of the preparation of chlorhydroquinone, 2 : 5-dichlorhydroquinone, trichlorhydroquinone and tetrachlorhydroquinone. The hydroquinone may contain simple substituents such as an alkyl group.
