Abstract

Unsaturated derivatives of 2 - methyl - 2 - hydroxy-3-halogen-tetrahydrofuranes containing one molecule of water less than the parent compound are prepared and converted to Vitamin B1 by a process which comprises subjecting 2-methyl-2,3-dihalogen-tetrahydrofuranes or reaction mixtures containing these compounds to the action of reagents which are capable of splitting of halide acid, e.g. pyridine and, if desired, subjecting to the action of 2-alkyl-4-amino-5-(thioformanidoalkyl)-pyrimidine to produce Vitamin B1. The unsaturated derivatives of 2-methyl-2-hydroxy-3-halogen-tetrahydrofuranes containing one molecule of water less than the parent compound may also be prepared by treating aceto-chloro-propyl alcohol with phosphorous halogenides and treating the reaction mixture with agents capable of splitting off a halide acid.
