Abstract

The invention comprises substituted steroids of the general formula <FORM:0983893/C2/1> wherein n is 2 or 3, R represents hydrogen, an alkali metal or a methyl or ethyl radical, and the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 2-unsubstituted compound with a lower alkyl formate in the presence of an alkali metal base, acidifying the reaction product and, if necessary, treating an acid product with one equivalent of an alkali metal base to form a desired alkali metal salt. Therapeutic compositions having myotrophic activity and which may be administered orally or parenterally contain steroids of the above formula. 17a - Methyl - 17b - hydroxy - 5a - androstan - 3 - one - 17 - carbomethoxypropionate, carboethoxypropionate, carbomethoxybutyrate or carboethoxybutyrate are prepared by reacting a solution of 17a -methyl-17b -hydroxy-5a -androstan - 3 - one 3 - cycloethylene ketal with ethyl magnesium bromide and then with b -carbomethoxypropionyl chloride, b -carboethoxypropionyl chloride, g -carbomethoxybutyryl chloride or g -carboethoxybutyryl chloride respectively, and heating the resulting reaction product with p-toluene sulphonic acid.
