Abstract
657,539. Electrolytic oxidation. FARKAS, H., and SCHAECHTER, O. July 3, 1947, No. 17550. [Class 41] A process for the electrolytic oxidation of a primary alcohol (or compound containing a primary alcohol group) to produce its corresponding carboxylic acid or the ester of this acid and the primary alcohol comprises applying a direct current to a mixture of the primary alcohol and an aqueous solution of an electrolyte containing both copper and bromide ions. The temperature of the mixture is preferably kept below 50 C. and the mixture is vigorously stirred during electrolysis. The bromide ions may be provided by potassium or sodium bromide, dissolved in the solution and the copper ions may be provided by dissolved copper sulphate. A chromate may be added to the solution. Examples are given of the oxidation of ethyl, butyl and amyl alcohols and of 2-benzyl-oxy-ethanol and ethylene chlorohydrin.
