Abstract

555,293. Iodine compounds. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Tyler Laboratories, Inc.). Jan. 16, 1942, No. 691. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VI] . An iodine compound of amino-acetic acid, the aqueous solution of which is a solvent for iodine, the solution being suitable for pharmaceutical and disinfectant purposes, is made by adding free iodine to an aqueous solution of amino-acetic acid, preferably in the presence of a small quantity of metallic iron. The ferric iodide produced from the iron may be removed by active carbon. For pharmaceutical purposes the acidity of the solution may be reduced by adding an alkaline salt such as an alkali bicarbonate, and potassium chloride, sodium chloride and sodium sulphate are preferably added. A strong alkali such as caustic soda should not be used to reduce the acidity when this is to be effected after iodine is dissolved in the solvent.
