Abstract
Ferric iron is removed from an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt, e.g. magnesium acetate by mixing a finely divided solid barium carbonate with said solution and subsequently separating the solution from the solid phase which contains the ferric iron. If ferrous iron is present, a water-soluble oxidising agent may be added to the solution before or after the barium carbonate. Oxidising agents referred to are hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, sodium perborate, sodium hypochlorite, sodium hypobromite, sodium hypoiodite and sodium perchlorate. After addition of the barium carbonate and thorough mixing, the mixture is allowed to stand, and a filter aid may be added to facilitate separation of the solid. The magnesium may then, if desired, be separated from the solution by precipitation with caustic soda or soda ash, to form respectively magnesium hydroxide or carbonate. These precipitates may then if desired be reacted with thioglycollic acid as described in Specification 858,216 to form magnesium thioglycollate in the form of a clear light-coloured and stable solution.ALSO:Ferric iron is removed from an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt by mixing a finely divided solid barium carbonate with said solution and subsequently separating the solution from the solid phase which contains the ferric iron. If ferrous iron is present, a water-soluble oxidising agent may be added to the solution before or after the barium carbonate. Salts referred to are the chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate and acetate; oxidising agents are hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, sodium perborate, sodium hypochlorite, sodium hypobromite, sodium hypoiodite and sodium perchlorate. Specification 858,216 is referred to.
