Abstract

547,027. Bis-oxyphenyl compounds. BRITISH COLLOIDS, Ltd., BALABAN, I. E., and JONES, J. I. M. Feb. 7, 1941, No. 1672. [Class 2 (iii)] Bis-oxyphenyl compounds are prepared from ethers of α-methyl cinnamic acid by a process which comprises treatment with a halogen in an inert solvent to form #-phenyl-α : #-dihalogeno isobutyric acid which is then treated with a dilute alkali to form ethers of α-halogen- α-phenyl - propylene, two molecules of which are finally condensed in the presence of a metal to form the required ethers of polyhydroxy - y - 8 - diphenyl - # : S - hexadienes. The preferred halogen which is used in the above reactions is bromine. In an example a chloroform solution of the methyl ether of 4-hydroxy - x - methyl cinnamic acid is treated with bromine to give # - (methoxyphenyl) - α : #- dibromo isobutyric acid. This on treatment with dilute sodium hydroxide produces α - brom anethole, which when treated with powdered magnesium in the presence of a little ethyl bromide as catalyst forms dimethoxyy - 8 - diphenyl - # - # - hexadiene. Hydrolysis by means of alcoholic potash yields the corresponding hydroxy compound.
