Abstract

cis-2-Methyl-1-pentenic acid is prepared by reacting a portion of a mixture of ethyl chloroacetate, methyl ethyl ketone and benzene with magnesium, with magnesium iodide or bromide as a catalyst, by heating to approximately 80 DEG C., adding the remainder of the mixture, dehydrating the resulting ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-methylvalerate with concentrated sulphuric acid, heating the resulting ethyl 2-methyl-1-pentenate (mixture of cis- and trans-isomers) with methanolic potassium hydroxide solution for 12-16 hours, and treating the potassium cis-2-methyl-1-pentenate obtained with aqueous sulphuric acid.
