Abstract
Copper phthalocyanine is sulphonated with an excess of 15 per cent oleum at 170-175 DEG C. for about two hours in presence of mercuric sulphate, the reaction mixture is cooled, diluted with water, and brought to a pH not less than 8 (e.g. with 40 per cent caustic soda solution); the pH is then reduced to not more than 5 with acetic acid, and the mixture is cooled, e.g. to 30 DEG C., and treated with excess of a -triphenyl guanidine in hot aqueous alcoholic acetic acid solution to form a guanidine salt of the dye, which salt is removed and dissolved in ethyl alcohol. Finally, the sodium salt of the sulphonated copper phthalocyanine is precipitated, e.g. by adding anhydrous sodium acetate at about 70 DEG C. The amount of oleum may be 10 times the weight of copper phthalocyanine, and the amount of mercuric sulphate up to 4 per cent of that weight. The product is useful in colour photography.
