Abstract

Stable aquasols of inorganic oxides, e.g. silica, are prepared by mixing an organoaquasol of the oxide having a pH of 2 to 4 with a dilute solution containing an alkaline compound, e.g. sodium, potassium, lithium or caesium hydroxides or quaternary ammonium bases, and having a pH of 9 or higher, to raise the pH of the sol to above 8 and then removing the organic diluent by, for example, distillation or stripping with other organic solvents. The acid reacting sol may be added, together with water if desired, to the alkaline solution in a plurality of portions and the organic diluent removed between the additions. Alternatively, a portion of the acid reacting sol may be first added and the remainder added continuously as the organic diluent is simultaneously removed at such a rate as to maintain constant the amount of organic diluent in the mix, the remaining amount of organic diluent being removed after all the sol has been added. An acid reacting organo-aquasol of silica is preferably prepared by reacting an alkali silicate with an inorganic acid to give a silica aquasol of pH 2-4, the aquasol then being mixed with an organic diluent, e.g., methanol, ethanol. 2 propanol, n-propanol, acetone, 2 methyl-2 propanol, monoethyl and monomethyl ethers of ethylene glycol and cooled if desired, to precipitate the inorganic salt which is then removed. The alkaline reacting aquasols and the intermediate alkaline reacting organo-aquasols may be employed for impregnating paper and textiles. Specifications 649,896 and 654,850 are referred to.
