Abstract
The invention comprises complexes of iodine with an alkanoyl taurate of the formula <FORM:1004918/C2/1> where R is a benzoyl radical or a radical of the formula CxH2x+1CO with x being an integer from 5 to 17, R1 is hydrogen, a C1 to C4 alkyl radical or a cyclohexyl radical, and Y is hydrogen or a cation, e.g. sodium, the proportion of alkanoyl taurate to iodine being within the range of from 2: 1 to 50: 1 by weight. The complex also comprises iodide ions, the proportion of which to iodine should be in excess of 0.25: 1 by weight. The complexes can be prepared by mixing the alkanoyl taurate and iodine under anhydrous or aqueous conditions, with an iodide source, e.g. HI or alkali metal iodide, being introduced concurrently or subsequently. The complexes are used as germicides (see Division A5).ALSO:Germicidal compositions comprise, together with a suitable carrier, a complex of iodine with an alkanoyl taurate of the formula <FORM:1004918/A5-A6/1> where R is a radical of the formula CXH2X + 1 CO, with x being an integer from 5 to 17, or the benzoyl radical, R1 is hydrogen, a C1 to C4 alkyl radical or a cyclohexyl radical, and y is hydrogen or a cation, e.g. sodium, the proportion of alkanoyl taurate to iodine being within the range of from 2 : 1 to 50 : 1 by weight. The complex also comprises iodide ions, the proportion of which to iodine should be in excess of 0.25 : 1 by weight; the iodide ions are suitably provided by HI or alkali metal iodide. The compositions may contain an acid such as phosphoric or hydroxyacetic acid or a mixture thereof to provide a pH below 4; a non-ionic surface active agent, e.g. a nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensate, may also be present. The compositions may be in the form of solid formulations or concentrated solutions for dissolving in or diluting with water.
