Abstract

1,1,1 - Trifluoro-2-bromo-2-chloroethane is prepared by heating bromochloroacetic acid or a salt (e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt), halide or C1-6 alkyl ester thereof with sulphur tetrafluoride. A fluoride ion acceptor may be present as catalyst, particularly an acid or acid reacting catalyst, e.g. HF or BF3. Preferably between 1 and 6 moles of sulphur tetrafluoride are used per mole of bromochloracetic compound. Superatmospheric pressure is preferably used. Specification 823,336 is referred to.
