Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0860860/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof, wherein n is 0 or 1, R is an p alkyl radical and R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen, a straight or branched saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical or a hydroxyalkyl or an aminoalkyl radical, and the preparation of compounds of the above general formula in which R1 and R2 are as defined but R1 is not a hydrogen atom, by reacting a tertiary alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0860860/IV (b)/2> with hydrocyanic acid or with an alkyl-, hydroxy-alkyl-, or aminoalkyl-cyanide in the presence of a strong condensation agent to give the 3-alkylamide which is then reduced. The condensation agent is preferably sulphuric acid or a sulphonic acid. Formamide intermediates give on hydrolysis with strong alkalis the primary amine. Primary amines are converted into secondary or tertiary amines by known methods, such as reaction with an alkyl halide, and unsaturated compounds are reduced to normal saturated amines if desired. The methiodide of 3-(N-a -dimethylamino - iso - propyl)-bicyclo-[2,2,1]-heptane is also described. 3 - Dimethylcarbinol - bicyclo - [2,2,1] - heptane is prepared from 3-methylketo-bicyclo-[2,2,1]-heptane with methyl magnesium bromide, some 3 - (a - methylethylene) - bicyclo - [2,2,1] - heptane being formed as a by-product. 3-(b -Dimethylethanol) - bicyclo - [2,2,1] - heptane is prepared from the corresponding acetic acid ester and methyl magnesium bromide.
