Abstract
The invention comprises substituted succinimides of the general formula <FORM:0984852/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or the methyl radical, and the preparation thereof by reacting a - methyl - a - phenyl - b - ethylsuccinic acid or the anhydride or acid halide thereof with with ammonia or methylamine. Therapeutic compositions having a tranquillizing activity and which may be administered orally in conjunction with a solid or liquid carrier contain as the active ingredient a substituted succinimide of the above general formula. a - Methyl - a - phenyl - b - ethylsuccinic acid is prepared by reacting a lower alkyl ester of a -cyano - b - methylcinnamate with potassium cyanide and ethyl bromide to form a ,b -dicyano-a - ethyl - b - methylphenylpropionate and hydrolysing and decarboxylating this compound by heating in the presence of aqueous sulphuric-acetic acid. The corresponding acid halides and anhydride are prepared by conventional methods from the free acid, for example, heating the free acid with acetyl chloride forms the anhydride.
