Abstract
Sulphuric esters of aliphatic alcohols containing at least 9 carbon atoms in the molecule are used in the acid felting of wool, e.g. with sulphuric, acetic, lactic, or formic acid. The felting process is accelerated, and the material becomes clearer and softer than when the sulphuric esters are not added to the felting liquid. In an example, octadecyl sulphuric acid ester is added to a sulphuric acid felting liquid. The sulphuric esters of lauryl and stearyl alcohols are also mentioned. The esters are prepared by treatment of the alcohols with sulphonating agents, e.g. oleum or chlorsulphonic acid, if desired in the presence of inorganic or organic acid anhydrides or chlorides, or by addition of sulphuric acid to the corresponding olefinic hydrocarbons.
