Sulphonation of oils and fats or their fatty acids by means of sulphur trioxide or chlorsulphonic acid is affected in the presence of lower fatty acids other than glacial acetic acid, such as formic, propionic, butyric or lactic acid in anhydrous condition, or the anhydrides of lower fatty acids, such as acetic, propionic, butyric anhydride or the acid chlorides of these acids.
