Abstract
Unsaturated hydroxy fatty oils, or the free fatty acids derived therefrom are first acylated in known manner, and then sulphonated by means of oleum, in the presence or absence of an organic acid anhydride. The products are used as emulsifying agents. In examples: (1) castor oil is acetylated by heating under reflux, with acetic anhydride, and sulphonated with oleum, or with a mixture of oleum and acetic anhydride; (2) ricinoleic acid is benzoylated and then sulphonated with a mixture of acetic anhydride and oleum.ALSO:Sulphonated fatty acid derivatives.-An unsaturated hydroxy fatty oil, or the free fatty acid derived therefrom is first acylated in known manner e.g. by means of an acid anhydride or chloride, and is then sulphonated with oleum, in the presence or absence of an organic acid anhydride. The products are wetting, cleansing and emulsifying agents, and are stable to alkalies, alkaline earths and to acids. In examples: (1) Castor oil is acetylated by heating, under reflux, with acetic anhydride, and after removal of the resulting acetic acid and the excess acetic anhydride is sulphonated with oleum or with a mixture of oleum and acetic anhydride; (2) ricinoleic acid is benzoylated by treatment with benzoyl chloride and caustic soda, and, after separation, is sulphonated with a mixture of acetic anhydride and oleum. According to the Provisional Specification any sulphonating agent may be employed and ketenes are mentioned as suitable acylating agents.
