Abstract

Oils, fats or fatty acids, consisting essentially of unsaturated compounds are sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid, in the presence of the products obtained by treating p aliphatic mono- or polyvalent alcohols containing up to six carbon atoms in the molecule, or their organic or inorganic esters, ethers or hydroxyalkylized derivatives with excess of sulphuric acid. The resulting sulphonated oils, &c. are wetting agents which are stable to inorganic or organic acids and solutions containing alkalies, alkaline salts and magnesium sulphate. In examples (1) castor oil is treated with sulphuric acid at 0 DEG C. and below in the presence of products obtained by sulphonating (a) butyl alcohol with sulphuric acid and (b) propionic ether with fuming sulphuric acid; (2) a mixture of soya bean oil and castor oil is sulphonated with sulphuric acid in the presence of sulphonated methyl glycol; (3) a mixture of oleic acid and castor oil is sulphonated with sulphuric acid in the presence of the product obtained by treating ethylglycolacetate with sulphuric acid.
