Abstract
Products resembling Turkey red oils are prepared from unsubstituted, unsaturated aliphatic and cycloaliphatic alcohols containing not less than eight carbon atoms by treating them first with an acylating agent and then with a sulphonating agent. The sulphonation first produces saturation of the double bond or bonds, but with further treatment the hydroxy group is replaced by a sulphuric ester group with removal of the acyl group. If the second stage is effected with chlorsulphonic acid, the acylating agent may be recovered, e.g., as acetyl chloride. By hydrolysis of the disulphonated products, dihydroxy derivatives are obtained. In examples: (1) commercial oleic alcohol is acetylated with acetylchloride and sulphonated with sulphuric acid and neutralized: (2) a sulphonated oleic alcohol prepared as in the previous example is further sulphonated: (3) the fatty alcohols from sperm oil are treated first with acetic anhydride and then with sulphuric acid; after prolonged treatment, the product is boiled with water and the hydrolysis completed with soda lye, whereby a hard wax is obtained which may be emulsified by means of soapy substances. The alcohols derived from the bottle-nosed whale are mentioned. Specification 307,709, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the sulphonation, after acylation, of any unsaturated fatty substance containing a hydroxy group. In an example, acetylricinoleic acid is sulphonated, a dioxystearic acid being obtained after prolonged sulphonation followed by hydrolysis. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A hard wax obtained by hydrolysis of a disulphonated unsaturated fatty alcohol derived from sperm oil is emulsified with water by means of soap or soap-like substances.
