Abstract
516,740. Glyoxal. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 6, 1938, No. 20012.. [Class 2 (iii)] Glyoxal is prepared by heating glyoxal tetiacetate with at least four molecular proportions of an aliphatic monohydric alcohol, especially an alcohol containing at most three carbon atoms, such as methanol, ethanol, propanol or isopropanol, in the presence of water and of an acid stronger than acetic acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, benzene-sulphonic acid, oxalic acid or tartaric acid. The glyoxal tetracetate is converted into the tetracetal which is saponified, the acetic acid formed being esterified with the alcohol ; the ester and excess alcohol (if any) are then removed by distillation. Examples are given.
