Abstract

b -Chloropropionic esters are manufactured by adding hydrogen chloride to acrylic nitrile, saponifying the resulting chloropropionic nitrile and esterifying the chloropropionic acid with an alcohol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The addition of hydrogen chloride may be carried out by introducing gaseous hydrogen chloride into the nitrile, or by adding concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid and saturating with gaseous hydrogen chloride, in which case saponification occurs simultaneously. Any mono- or polyhydric alcohol, including derivatives of polyhydric alcohols containing free hydroxyl groups, e.g. ethylene chlorhydrin or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, may be employed, and may be added before adding the hydrogen chloride or before or after the saponification of the nitrile. Examples describe the manufacture of: (1) b -chloropropionic methyl ester; (2) b -chloropropionic ethyl ester; (3) b -chloropropionic benzyl ester; (4) ethylene glycol monochloropropionic ester; (5) b -chloropropionic chlorethyl ester; (6) the b -chloropropionic ester of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether.
