Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0750485/IV(a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or halogen and Z is halogen, hydroxy, or a lower aliphatic or aromatic acyloxy radical. The alcohols wherein Z is a hydroxy radical are made by reducing the corresponding aldehydes and they may in turn be converted into their esters or halides. In examples: (1) 5-nitro-2-thienyl acrolein is reduced with sodium borohydride to 5-nitro-2-thienyl allyl alcohol; (2) 5-nitro-2-thienyl allyl alcohol is treated with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride to give the corresponding p-nitrobenzoate; (3) a - bromo - b - (5 - nitro - 2 - thienyl) - acrolein is reduced with sodium borohydride to b -bromo-g -(5 - nitro - 2 - thienyl) - allyl alcohol; (4) b -bromo - g - (5 - nitro - 2 - thienyl) - allyl alcohol is treated with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride to give the p-nitrobenzoate; and (5) b -bromo-g -(5-nitro - 2 - thienyl) allyl alcohol is treated with thionyl chloride to give 1-(5-nitro-2-thienyl)-2-bromo-3-chloropropene.
