Abstract

Methacrylic esters of polyhydric aliphatic alcohols, e.g. the mono-, di- or polymethacrylates of glycerol, diethylene glycol, decamethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, pentamethylene glycol, 1 : 2-propylene glycol, butylene glycols, the a -and b -alkylglycerines, e.g. a -methylglycerine and its homologues, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and homologous polyhydric substituted and unsubstituted alcohols, are manufactured by reacting a lower alkyl ester of methacrylic acid with a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol or an alkali metal alcoholate thereof, in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid, preferably in the presence of an antipolymerization catalyst, e.g. hydroquinone, and if desired in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. benzene, or an excess of the lower alkyl ester of methacrylic acid. The products may be polymerized. In examples: (1) diethylene glycol is treated with sodium and the product is heated with methyl methacrylate in the presence of hydroquinone, producing diethylene glycol dimethacrylate; (2) glycerol similarly yields glycerol trimethacrylate; (3) decamethylene glycol is heated with methyl methacrylate in the presence of benzene, sulphuric acid and hydroquinone, to produce decamethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
