Abstract
Esters of dialkylaminoalkanols are prepared by heating the alcohol with an ester of an alcohol boiling below 140 DEG C. at 760 mm. and a carboxylic acid whose methyl ester boils above 170 DEG C., in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide catalyst and at an absolute pressure not exceeding 250 mm., the displaced alcohol being distilled off. In the example, ethyl p-aminobenzoate and sodium dissolved in diethylaminoethanol are refluxed under reduced pressure and ethyl alcohol removed as vapour and condensed. Excess diethylaminoethanol is then distilled off under still further reduced pressure. Another tertiary amino monohydric alcohol specified is dimethylaminoethanol. Other esters which may be used are those of methyl, propyl or butyl alcohols and benzoic, diphenylacetic, phenylcyclohexylacetic, salicylic, aminohydroxybenzoic and furoic acids.
