Abstract

Unsymmetrical benzyl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids of the general formula C6H5CH2OCORCOOR2 where R is an arylene group and R2 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl or alkenyl group are prepared by heating a monohydric alcohol R2OH where R2 is as defined above and also has a boiling point above that of benzyl alcohol, with a benzyl ester of the formula C6H5CH2OCORCOOR1 where R is as defined above and R1 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl or alkenyl group derived from a monohydric alcohol R1OH having a boiling point lower than that of the alcohol R2OH, in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst, for example an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide. The examples describe the preparation of benzyl phthalates where the following groups are interchanged: butyl to (1) n-decyl, (2) 5-ethyl-2-nonyl, (3) isodecyl, (4) 2-methyl-7-ethyl-4-undecyl, (5) tridecyl, (7) octadecyl, (8) 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonyl, (9) octylcyclohexyl, (10) oleyl, (11) b -(2-ethylhexoxy)-ethyl and (6) capryl to tridecyl.
