509,596. Polyvinyl acetal resin compositions. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Fiberloid Corporation). Nov. 17, 1937, No. 31639. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyvinyl acetal resins are plasticized with an ester formed from a polyhydric alcohol and at least two different organic acids or from a polycarboxylic acid and at least two different alcohols, the esterification having been carried if desired to the resin stage. A dihydric alcohol may be combined with two monocarboxylic acids and a trihydric alcohol with three monocarboxylic acids or one monocarboxylic and one dicarboxylic acid : a polycarboxylic acid may be combined with monohydric alcohols or, when two are used, with a monohydric and a polyhydric alcohol. In preparing the esters when using both polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids, undesired resin-formation is avoided, e.g., in preparing non-resinous diethyleneglycol propionate-phthalate, the propionate is stoichiometrically in excess, the phthalate preferably not being present in more than 1/3 the equivalent of the propionate. In examples : a polyvinyl formaldehyde acetal resin containing 82 per cent. acetal, 8 per cent. hydroxyl, and 10 per cent. acetate, is plasticized with diethyleneglycol propionate - butyrate. or - phthalate; polyvinyl butyraldehyde acetal resin containing 2 or less per cent. acetate, 16 to 20 per cent. hydroxyl, and the balance acetal, is plasticized with n-butyl-iso-butyl phthalate, butyl-hexyl phthalate, or diethyleneglycol laurate-acetate.
