Abstract

A composition comprises cellulose esterified with acetic acid and with a dicarboxylic acid, under such conditions that one carboxylic group of the dicarboxylic acid remains free, and an epoxy resin. Preferred compositions comprise a major proportion, especially 60-80% by weight, of the mixed cellulose ester and a minor proportion, especially 40-20% by weight, of the epoxy resin. The preferred dicarboxylic acid is phthalic acid, but other acids specified include succinic, maleic and tetrahydrophthalic acids, and the preferred mixed ester contains a major proportion of acetyl groups with a minor proportion of the dicarboxylic acid group. Desirably the epoxy resin is an epoxy ester resin, especially one made by reacting D 4-tetrahydrophthalic acid or anhydride with a glycol to form a polyester resin and then epoxidizing the polyester resin, e.g. with peracetic acid. Specified glycols include ethylene glycol, 1:2 propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and triethylene glycol. The mixed cellulose ester and epoxy resin may be blended together in the absence of a solvent or in the presence of a mutual solvent, especially acetone. Filaments, films and coatings may be made from the solutions by conventional methods. On standing or heating such a filament, film or coating the epoxy resin cross-links the cellulose ester thus rendering the composition insoluble. Examples describe the preparation of films by casting acetone solutions of cellulose acetate phthalate-epoxy resin compositions and heating or standing to insolubilize the films.
