Abstract

Imidocarboxylic acids of the formula <FORM:0988828/C2/1> where R is an inert, aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical are made by reacting primary amines with tricarboxylic acid anhydrides. Examples (1) and (3) describe the reaction of trimellitic anhydride with a fatty amine.ALSO:A method of making a modified polyester comprises reacting at least one polyhydric alcohol with at least one polycarboxylic acid reactive derivative thereof, and at least one monocarboxylic acid as modifying agent, wherein said polyhydric alcohol or at least one of said polyhydric alcohols has three or more hydroxyl groups and/or said polycarboxylic acid or at least one of said polycarboxylic acids has three or more carboxyl groups, wherein the amount of said reaction component or components having three or more reactive groups is at least equal to the amount of monocarboxylic acid or acids used, and wherein said monocarboxylic acid or at least one of said monocarboxylic acids is an imidocarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0988828/C3/1> where R is an inert, aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical. Polyesteramides may be made by replacing part of the polyhydric alcohol by a polyamine. The products are suitable for use in impregnating varnishes in admixture with cross-linking agents, e.g. phenolic resins, aminoplasts and polyisocyanates. In the examples, polymers are made from:-(1) the trimethylol propane monoester of an imidocarboxylic acid derived from trimellitic anhydride and a fatty amine, ethylene glycol and isophthalic acid in the presence of butyl titanate and (3) an imidocarboxylic acid derived from trimellitic acid and a fatty amine and a polyester made by reacting isophthalic acid, trimethylol propane, ethylene glycol and 1:4-butanediol, the products being:-(1) dissolved in xylene and mixed with a butylated melamine-formaldehyde condensate and (3) dissolved in methyl glycol acetate, butyl acetate and xylene and mixed with polymerized phenol-masked toluylene diisocyanate. In Example (2) a solution in xylene of the modified polyester of (1) is mixed with a solution in xylene of a butylated urea-formaldehyde condensate.
