Abstract
Electrical apparatus is insultated by the application of a composition comprising cellulose esters of organic acids, or ethers, and a larger proportion of plasticizing agent than is usual, in general at least 50 per cent of the weight of the ester or 20-35 per cent of that of the ether used. Suitable cellulose derivatives are cellulose acetate, butyrate, and benzoate, and methyl, ethyl, and benzyl cellulose, while plasticizers specified are trialkyl or aryl phosphates, alkyl phthalates or tartrates, glycerol esters, as triacetin. Resins, fillers, castor oil, dyes, &c., may be added. Several examples are given, of which the following is typical:-100 parts of cellulose acetate are kneaded with 300 parts of acetone, and 23 parts of tricresyl phosphate, 12 parts of triphenyl phosphate, 21 parts of dibutyl phthalate, 24 parts of triacetin, 45 parts of acetone, and 5 parts of shellac dissolved in alcohol are added with stirring. The mass is run into films, or formed into rods, sheets, &c.
