513,117. Polyvinyl acetal resins. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). March 22, 1938, No. 8825. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyvinyl acetal resins are prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol, or a polyvinyl ester under saponifying conditions, with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, with a saturated aliphatic aldehyde containing three or more carbon atoms, and with an aromatic aldehyde. Saponifying conditions may be produced by working in alcohol (e.g. methyl, ethyl, or iso-propyl alcohol) solution in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, trichloracetic, or organic sulphonic acids, with or without water or dioxane. Other acetalysis catalysts are zinc chloride and phosphoric acid. There are specified : polyvinyl esters-acetate, chloracetate, propionate, butyrate ; aliphatic aldehydes-n- or iso-butyraldehyde, propionaldehyde, n-heptaldehyde; aromatic aldehydesbenzaldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, o-chlorbenzaldehyde, m-nitrobenzaldehyde. The products may, with or without plasticizers such as tributyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, diamylphthalate, dibutyl phthalate, di- and tri-glycerol esters, e.g. acetins, propionins, butyrins, and monochlornaphthalene, be used in moulding compositions or as sheets, e.g. for interlayers for safety glass, for photographic films, or for wrapping foils. Examples illustrate the preparation of polyvinyl formaldehyde-butyraldehyde-benzaldehyde, formaldehyde-heptaldehyde-o-chlorbenzaldehyde, formaldehyde - propionaldehyde - m - nitrobenzaldehyde, acetaldehyde-butyraldehyde-benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde-propionaldehyde-o-chlorbenzaldehyde, and acetaldehyde-heptaldehydem-nitrobenzaldehyde acetal resins. Specification 483,223 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 483,223.
