Abstract

Hydraulic systems contain as the operative fluid a triaryl phosphate mixture obtainable by reacting an ester-forming derivative of phosphoric acid, e.g. POCl3, P2O5 or PCl5, with a mixture containing by weight 11 to 17% of meta- and para-cresols, 65 to 80% of xylenols and 8 to 12% of higher alkyl monohydric phenols in which the alkyl group or groups of each phenol contain a total of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. propyl phenol, methyl ether phenol and butyl phenol (see Group IV (b)). A small proportion (up to 3% by weight, but preferably not more than 1% by weight) of ortho-cresol may also be present in the mixture of phenols to be reacted. The triaryl phosphate mixtures are also useful as lubricants.ALSO:A triaryl phosphate mixture is obtained by reacting an ester-forming derivative of phosphoric acid, e.g. POCl3, P2O5 or PCl5 with a mixture containing by weight 11 to 17% (preferably 14%) of meta- and para-cresols, 65 to 80% (preferably 75%) of xylenols, and 8 to 12% (preferably 10%) of higher alkyl monohydric phenols, in which the alkyl group or groups of each phenol contain a total of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. propyl phenol, methyl ethyl phenol and butyl phenol. The invention also includes the triaryl phosphate mixtures obtainable by such process. A small proportion, up to 3% by weight, but preferably not more than 1% by weight, of ortho-cresol may also be present. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a metal halide catalyst, e.g. aluminium chloride or magnesium chloride and a 5 to 8% by weight excess of phenolic hydroxyl is generally employed. The triaryl phosphate mixtures are suitable for use as lubricants and hydraulic fluids (see Group III) and as plasticizers for various thermoplastic materials (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:A thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or a cellulosic ester of a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a cellulose ether, e.g. ethyl cellulose, is plasticized with a triaryl phosphate mixture obtainable by reacting an ester-forming derivative of phosphoric acid, e.g. POCl3, P2O5 or PCl5, with a mixture containing by weight 11 to 17% of meta- and para-cresols, 65 to 80% of xylenols, and 8 to 12% of higher alkyl monohydric phenols in which the alkyl group or groups of each phenol contain a total of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. propyl phenol, methyl ethyl phenol, and butyl phenol (see Group IV (b)). A small proportion-up to 3% by weight, but preferably not greater than 1% by weight-of ortho cresol may also be present. In an example 40 parts of a triaryl phosphate obtained by reacting a phenolic mixture containing by weight 14% of meta- and para-cresols, 75% of xylenols and 10% of the higher alkyl phenols with POCl3 are blended with 60 parts of polyvinyl chloride and 1.0 part of lead stearate added.
