Abstract

An hydraulic system contains as the operative fluid a triaryl phosphate mixture obtainable by reacting an ester-forming phosphoric acid derivative, e.g. POCl3, P2O5 or PCl5, with a mixture of phenol and cresylic acid containing 1.9 to 2.1 mols. of phenol and preferably 2 mols. of phenol for each mol. of cresylic acid (see Group IV (b)). The triaryl phosphate mixture is also useful as a lubricant.ALSO:A triaryl phosphate mixture is obtained by reacting an ester-forming derivative of phosphoric acid with a mixture of phenol and cresylic acid containing 1.9 to 2.1 mols. of phenol and preferably 2.0 mols of phenol for each mol. of cresylic acid. The invention also comprises triaryl phosphate mixtures obtainable by such process. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a metal halide catalyst such as aluminium chloride or magnesium p chloride. A 2 to 5% molar excess of phenol and cresylic acid is generally employed and the mixture is heated slowly to a maximum temperature of about 160 DEG C. over a period of 6 to 10 hours. The triaryl phosphate mixtures are suitable for use as lubricants and hydraulic fluids (see Group III) and as plasticizers for various thermoplastic materials (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:A thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or a cellulosic ester of a saturated C2-C4 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or a cellulose ether, e.g. ethyl cellulose, is plasticized with a triaryl phosphate mixture obtainable by reacting an ester-forming derivative of phosphoric acid, e.g. POCl3, P2O5 or PCl5, with a mixture of phenol and cresylic acid containing 1.9 to 2.1 mols. of phenol and preferably 2 mols. of phenol for each mol. of cresylic acid (see Group IV (b)). In an example polyvinyl chloride is plasticized with 40% by weight of a triaryl phosphate mixture obtained by reacting a mixture of 110 parts by weight of cresylic acid and 188 parts by weight of phenol with phosphorus oxychloride.
