Abstract

A phosphorus-containing polyester resin is made by effecting a transesterification reaction between a dialkyl phosphite (e.g. dimethyl or diethyl phosphite) and an aliphatic glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, pentamethylene glycol or 2-methyl-pentanediol-2,4). Reaction is generally effected in an inert atmosphere at 80-200 DEG C. while the monohydric alcohol liberated is distilled off. The transesterification is completed by heating under diminished pressure and at a temperature such that any unreacted glycol is distilled off. Catalysts, e.g. sodium, and/or magnesium, sodium amide, sodium alkoxide or the corresponding potassium or magnesium compounds or phosphoric acid may be used. The products are useful in the manufacture of flame-resistant resins, paints and lacquers and also in the manufacture of lubricant additives and hydraulic fluids.
