Abstract

A racemic 7-hydroxy-1 : 2-dialkyl-hydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acid, in which the phenolic hydroxyl group is protected, is resolved by esterifying by means of an optically active alcohol, e.g. borneol, terpineol, tetrahydronaphthol and d- or l-menthol, separating the two dia-stereoisomers so obtained from one another, and then, if desired, treating the latter with an agent capable of converting the esterified carboxyl group and/or the protected phenolic hydroxyl group into a free carboxyl and/or hydroxyl group, e.g. with pyridine salts. The phenolic group of the racemic acids may be protected by etherification with methanol, ethanol, a phenol, a benzyl alcohol or the like. A detailed example is given.
