Abstract
Sulphonated oil preparations having improved wetting, softening, &c. properties are prepared from higher aliphatic poly carboxylic acids having at least eight carbon atoms by (1) reducing the carboxylic groups to alcoholic groups and sulphonating, (2) reducing some of the carboxylic groups to alcoholic groups, esterifying the remaining carboxylic groups with alcohols or phenols and then sulphonating, or (3) esterifying the carboxylic groups with alcohols or phenols reducing some of the ester groups and then sulphonating the resulting hydroxyesters. The polybasic acids may be prepared by adding a hydrogen halide to an unsaturated carboxylic acid, treating with potassium cyanide and saponifying the resulting nitrite. In examples: (1) ricinoleic acid is treated with hydrobromic acid in acetic acid solution, and the addition product converted into a nitrite by means of potassium cyanide. After saponification, the resulting hydroxydicarboxylic acid is esterified with n-butyl alcohol, and reduced with sufficient sodium in ethyl alcohol to reduce one ester group, whereby octadecanediolcarboxylic-n-butyl-ester is obtained. This is sulphonated with sulphuric acid: (2) the hydroxydicarboxylicdi-iso-butylester prepared in the first example is treated with sufficient sodium and alcohol if desired in the presence of hydrogen under pressure to reduce both ester groups. The nondecanetriol produced is then sulphonated: (3) nondecanoldicarboxylic acid prepared as in the first example is reduced with hydrogen, using finely divided copper as catalyst, until one carboxylic group is reduced. The resulting hydroxycarboxylic acid is esterified with iso-propyl alcohol, in the presence of chlorsulphonic acid, and then sulphonated; (4) the nondecanoldicarboxylic acid is esterified with phenol in the presence of phosphorus trichloride, the ester reduced with the requisite quantity of sodium and alcohol to reduce one ester group and the resulting hydroxyester sulphonated. Specification 344,829 is referred to.
