Abstract

Esters and nitriles of a -haloacrylic acids are produced by the dehydrohalogenation of the corresponding ester or nitrile of a b -dihalopropionic acid by treating it in aqueous solution with one of the following alkaline materials: dialkali metal hydrogen phosphates and arsenates, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and arsenate and alkali metal ammonium hydrogen phosphates and arsenates. Preferably the dehydrohalogenation is carried out at 50-100 DEG C. and the product is steam-distilled to isolate the ester or nitrile. It is advisable for the dehydrohalogenation and distillation to be carried out in an atmosphere of nitrogen and in the absence of light. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone or N-phenyl b -naphthylamine may be added. Suitable esters for use as starting materials are the methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, amyl, benzyl, p-methoxy-benzyl and p-chlorbenzyl esters of dihalopropionic acid. In the examples: (a) the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl and benzyl esters of a b -dichloropropionic acid are dehydrohalogenated according to the above process to give the corresponding esters of a -chloroacrylic acid and (b) a b -dichlorpropionitrile is dehydrohalogenated to give a -chloroacrylonitrile.
