Abstract

Hydrogencyanide is reacted with a vinyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst whereby the corresponding 1-cyanoethyl ester is obtained. In examples, hydrogencyanide is reacted with vinylacetate in the presence of potassium and sodium cyanide, sodium carbonate and 3-methoxypropylamine. Vinylbutyrate and vinyl (a -ethylhexanoate) are similarly treated in other examples. Benzene, toluene or other organic diluent may be used. The products on heating yield acrylonitrile and the corresponding acid which may be treated with acetylene to give further amounts of the vinylester. Vinyl (a -ethylhexanoate) may be prepared by the addition of acetylene to a -ethylhexanoic acid in the presence of borontrifluoride and hydrogenfluoride.
