Abstract

The invention comprises the d -lactone of 9-21 61, 61-trimethyl-cyclohexenyl-11)-3, 7-dimethyl-5-hydroxy-nona-2, 6, 8-triene carboxylic acid and a process for the production of acids of the vitamin A series, which comprises reacting a g -halo-b -methylcrotonic acid ester with an aldehyde of the vitamin A series under the conditions of the Reformatsky reaction and treating the resulting lactone with a proton acceptor in an anhydrous medium to form the isomeric g , d -unsaturated acid. As the g -halo-b -methylcrotonic acid ester there may be used g -bromo-b -methylcrotonate or isopropyl g -iodo-b -methylcrotonate and as the aldehyde there may be used a -or b -cyclocitral or b -ionylidene acetaldehyde. Examples describe the preparation of 2-cis-b -ionylidene acetic acid and 2-cis-vitamin A acid.
