Abstract
Carbon monoxide is removed from ethylene by selective oxidation by passing with oxygen over a rhodium-containing catalyst at 25-150 DEG C.; if acetylene and hydrogen are also present the acetylene is selectively hydrogenated. The rhodium catalyst may be mixed with another platinum metal, particularly platinum and supported on activated alumina, silica, silica gel, or kieselguhr. The gas is passed over the catalyst at a rate of 100-5,000 standard volumes per hour per volume of catalyst at 0-1,000 p.s.i.g. The oxygen should be present in at least the stoichiometric amount for reaction with carbon monoxide and may be present in up to 20 times this amount. Many gas mixtures frequently contain sufficient oxygen, otherwise oxygen or air is added.ALSO:Carbon monoxide present in ethylene is selectively oxidised to carbon dioxide by oxygen at 25-150 DEG C. over a catalyst containing rhodium and optionally another platinum metal, preferably platinum. The catalyst may be supported on activated alumina, silica, silica gel, kieselguhr or diatomaceous earth. Flow rates of 100-5,000 vol./vol./hr. are used at pressures of 0-1,000 p.s.i.g. Oxygen may be present in amounts of 1-20 times the stoichiometric quantity for combining with the carbon monoxide.
