Abstract
Hydrocyanic acid is produced by reacting a mixture of a volatile nitrogen compound and a volatile carbon compound, with or without oxygen, in the presence of a metal alloy or metallic mixture catalyst containing at least 5 per cent by weight of ruthenium based on the metallic content of the catalyst. Ammonia and hydrocarbons, especially methane, say 1 : 1.05 by volume, may be passed at 800-1200 DEG C over alloys of platinum with say up to 35 per cent ruthenium, which may contain palladium, iridium, or osmium, as foils or wire gauze, or over mixed catalysts deposited from salts solutions on to ceramic carriers. Nitrogen oxygen compounds may be used in place of or together with ammonia.
