Abstract

In the production of hydrogen cyanide by interacting gaseous ammonia, oxygen and methane over a platinum metal catalyst, preferably a platinum-rhodium or platinum-iridium alloy catalyst, at a temperature of 1000 to 1260 DEG C., preferably 1100 to 1260 DEG C., natural gas containing between 80 and 92 per cent of methane, air and ammonia are mixed in a ratio providing 1.1 to 1.2 moles of methane per mole of ammonia and 1.4 to 1.5 moles of oxygen per mole of methane, the gaseous mixture is preheated to from 300 to 350 DEG C., and then passed over the catalyst. Specification 361,004 is referred to.
