Abstract

1,126,022. Carboxylic acid purification. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 May, 1966 [6 May, 1965 (2)], Nos. 19172/66 and 19173/65. Heading C2C. Formic acid is selectively decomposed in a mixture of formic acid and other carboxylic acids e.g. aliphatio (C2-8) carboxylic acids such as acetic acid, by contacting the mixture in the liquid phase with a platinum group metal in the presence of a base. Platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium and ruthenium may be used supported on for example silica gel. Prepared bases are alkali metal, alkalineearth metal or ammonium carboxylates, e.g. lithium or ammonium acetate. Iridium metal, precipitated by heating an iridate, iridite or chlorioridic acid in a reducing organic solvent in the absence of oxygen is a preferred catalyst. Examples describe the decomposition of formic acid in admixture with acetic acid.
