Abstract

Iridium metal is produced by refluxing a solution of an iridate, iridite or corresponding acid, e.g. chloroiridic acid, under an inert atmosphere in a reducing organic solvent such as a primary or secondary aliphatic alcohol, e.g. ethanol, or a mixture of acetic and formic acids optionally in the presence of ammonium acetate.ALSO:Primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols are oxidized to aldehydes, ketones and/or acids by contacting the alcohol in the liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of iridium metal. The catalyst, which is preferably unsupported, is produced by precipitation of iridium metal from a boiling solution of an iridate, iridite or corresponding acid, e.g. chloroiridic acid, under an inert atmosphere in a reducing organic solvent such as the alcohol to be reduced or a mixture of acetic and formic acids. Primary and secondary, saturated and unsaturated, monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, preferably methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and n-butanol may be oxidized using 10-3 to 10-5 moles per litre of iridium metal optionally in the presence of water amounting to up to 50% by weight of the reaction mixture. Acetone, acetic acid and acetaldehyde, and formic acid and methyl formate are obtained from isopropanol, ethanol and methanol respectively.
