Abstract

a -Acetoxypropionaldehyde is prepared by reacting liquid vinyl acetate with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a rhodium carbonyl or rhodium-containing substance which is converted into a rhodium carbonyl under the reaction conditions. The reaction is usually performed at 30 DEG to 180 DEG C. at greater than 50 kgs./cm.2 pressure employing a carbon monoxide to hydrogen volume ratio of 1 to 0.1-10 in the absence or presence of an organic solvent. Specified catalysts are rhodium tricarbonyl, trichloride, hydroxide, sesquioxide and organic and inorganic acid salts, and rhodium metal.
