Abstract

In a process for the production of unsaturated esters by reaction of an olefin or alkyl benzene, oxygen and an organic acid at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst containing elementary Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt, the catalyst is prepared by reducing a compound of the metal with a hydrocarbon at an elevated temperature. Reactions are preferably carried out in the gas phase at temperatures within the range 50 to 350 C. Supported palladium catalysts are preferred, and the palladium compounds may be converted into the oxide before reduction. The catalysts are regenerated by heating in the presence of oxygen and reducing the resulting oxide with a hydrocarbon. Silver or gold and an alkali metal salt may also be included in the catalyst. Examples describe the production of vinyl acetate using catalysts comprising palladium supported on a lithium/aluminium spinel and including sodium acetate, and palladium supported on silica and including gold and potassium acetate.
