Abstract
Vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride are prepared by a vinylation reaction using a catalyst made by passing zinc acetate or mercuric chloride respectively in the vapour state through a fluidised bed of activated carbon particles maintained throughout at a temperature between the sublimation and melting points of the zinc acetate or mercuric chloride. The fluidisation may be effected by (a) an inert gas or (b) acetylene with or without the respective reactants, i.e. acetic acid or hydrogen chloride. Thus catalyst formation and vinylation may be effected simultaneously.ALSO:Catalysts for the synthesis of vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride are prepared by passing zinc acetate or mercuric chloride respectively in the vapour state through a fluidised bed of activated carbon particles maintained throughout at a temperature between the sublimation and melting points of the zinc acetate or mercuric chloride. The fluidisation may be effected by (a) an inert gas or (b) acetylene with or without the respective reactants, i.e. acetic acid or hydrogen chloride. The method of the invention can also be applied to regenerate active carbon particles obtained from a catalyst which has lost its activity.
