Abstract

<PICT:0666529/III/1> In the production of catalysts for, e.g. the synthesis of vinyl chloride, by impregnating a solid material with a liquid containing a substance which is or is readily convertible into a catalytically active material, the impregnation is effected while the solid is maintained as a fluidized "boiling bed." By varying the temperature and duration of impregnation and the concentration of the catalytically active material within the liquid, the liquid content and degree of impregnation of the product may be controlled. As shown, a steam-jacketed tube 2 contains a bed of mildly activated charcoal 1 maintained in the fluidized state by an upwardly directed nitrogen stream which is preheated to 150 DEG C and introduced at 3. Aqueous mercuric chloride at or above 60 DEG C is sprayed through distributor 6 into the bed. Water and nitrogen are withdrawn at 7, charcoal introduced at 8 and finished catalyst withdrawn at 9. The method is also applicable to the production of the following catalysts; cobalt cyanide on alumina, potassium acetate on silica gel, and nickel or cobalt on charcoal, alumina, silica gel or broken firebrick, and in the latter case the support is impregnated with a soluble salt of the metal followed by ignition to oxide and reduction to metal.
