Abstract

<PICT:0640965/III/1> A supported cobalt molybdate catalyst for use in the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and the desulphurization of petroleum hydrocarbons is prepared by reacting a cobalt salt and a salt of molybdic acid in aqueous ammoniacal solution so as to form a solution of a cobalt molybdate-ammonia complex, applying the solution to a support of anhydrous porous gamma alumina or a mixture of boehmite and gamma alumina prepared by partially dehydrating boehmite and drying and finally heating the impregnated support. Preferred reactants are cobalt nitrate and ammonium molybdate. In an example the cobalt molybdate-ammonia complex solution prepared in steam heated vessel 14 is at 60 DEG C. circulated upwardly through heated vessel 10 containing alumina. Circulation is stopped and the impregnated alumina dried by passing air at 120-150 DEG C. through vessel 10 after which the dried product is heated to 550 DEG C.
