Abstract

1405714 Purification of hydrogen chloride IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 10236/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Hydrogen chloride gas contaminated with acetylene is purified by contacting with a catalyst comprising a compound of copper or mercury on an active charcoal support. Preferred compounds are mercuric chloride and cupric chloride and the preferred range for the proportion of compound to the total weight of active charcoal and compound is from 0À5 to 12À5 parts by weight per 100 parts of active charcoal and compound. Atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure may be used and a temperature in the range 100‹ C. to 300‹ C. is preferred. The process is applicable as a stage in a process for the production of vinyl chloride.
